Job Summary:

Provides technical training in the areas of phlebotomy, specimen processing, appropriate use of electronic health records, and also Quality Control and Point of Care testing procedures. Training will be provided for all Laboratory Assistant new hires, and any team member who will need to be cross trained to perform laboratory duties. Develop or implement training materials, with approval by Ancillary Services Manager and the Director of Nursing. Provides general user support. Travels to various CHC Centers as needed.

Responsible for collecting, logging, processing and reporting on all patient test specimens; insuring accuracy and promptness in reporting test results; reporting test results to the provider, especially in critical or life threatening situations; maintenance of current lab documentation.

Primary Responsibilities and Specific Duties:

  • Participates in patient care coordination, one-on-one communication, patient contact, email, and documentation of any services accessed and/or health care related concerns/needs that have arisen since last visit.
  • Participate in team meetings to address patient care and operational requirements.
  • May participate in huddles emphasizing a team based approach to care.
  • Patient tests, records and charts
  • Perform proper phlebotomy technique.
  • Accurately view and transmit orders within eCW.
  • Correlate test request with proper collection media.
  • Perform waived testing if necessary.
  • Assist providers in determining specific tests to be performed and/or availability of tests within eCW and reference labs.
  • Accurately process specimens and send out to correct reference lab.
  • Accurately verify billing.
  • Verify required consents are documented.
  • Enter specified results into eCW accurately.
  • Reporting of test results
  • Receive and log reports from reference lab.
  • Report abnormalities and critical values to provider.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient data.
  • Monitor electronic interface.
  • Train Lab Assistants or Clinical Support Staff in eCW regarding laboratory work flows.
  • Responsible for orienting new hires to the Ancillary Services Department.
  • Facilitates in-services, or refresher trainings for Ancillary Services or Clinical staff.
  • Assists in Ancillary Competencies
  • Participates with ordering processes including ordering supplies as needed
  • Assists in monitoring Ancillary standards and Quality Controls
  • Assists Ancillary Services Manager with developing and maintaining training documents or materials.
  • Troubleshoots issues that do not require IS support.
  • Travels to other CHC locations as needed.
  • Works with Ancillary Services Manager and IS to maintain updates within eCW.
  • Collaborates with Ancillary Services Manager to identify objectives and strategies for performance improvement in Laboratory Operations.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • May travel to other locations as necessary

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School or equivalent.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant course with valid Medical Assistant diploma, or documentation of training from other Medical Assistant courses may also be considered.

Experience:

  • One year experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Lab or phlebotomy experience may be considered without Medical Assistant diploma. New graduates will be considered.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Current/valid BLS certification, or must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Phlebotomy Certification
  • Phlebotomy Instructor's Certification

Special Skills:

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, office skills including telephone, computer and billing.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken/written) required.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.

Other requirements:

  • Able to work flexible hours as needed and sites as needed.
