Job Summary:

Responsible for performing dental assisting duties as outlined in Florida Statutes 466 and Administrative Rules 64B-5. Duties include screening and preparing patients for treatment, assisting the dentist during procedures, educating patients, and processing instruments. This role also involves facilitating the orientation of senior dental students, supporting dental hygiene students, and assisting the Dental Training Specialist with the clinical onboarding of new hires. Additionally, the position provides clinical dental assisting training to dental assistant students.

Primary Responsibilities and Specific Duties:

  • Patient Care
  • Verify patient by use of Double Identifier's
  • Obtain patient history
  • Document patient's chief complaint
  • Obtain patient's blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and/or glucose level, if necessary; enter on patient's chart
  • Place, expose, and develop necessary diagnostic x-rays
  • Assemble appropriate instrument tray
  • Perform dental procedure or assist dentist in performing procedure, as appropriate
  • Conduct patient education
  • Perform Expanded Functions approved by Florida Board of Dentistry (FAC 64B5-16.005)
  • Taking impressions for study casts
  • Topical application of fluoride (including foam & varnish)
  • Placing and removing rubber dams
  • Placing and removing periodontal dressings
  • Polishing clinical crowns for removal of stains
  • Polishing amalgam restorations
  • Placing and removing matrices
  • Placing intra-coronal provisional (temporary) restorations
  • Placing bases and liners
  • Suture removal
  • Application of pit & fissure sealants
  • Preliminary charting
  • Packing and removing retraction cord
  • Fabricating provisional crowns
  • Cementing provisional crowns with temporary cement
  • Non-Patient Duties
  • Maintain Log Manuals
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Order and organize supplies.
  • Change filters, change solutions or chemicals, clean and maintain equipment
  • Perform operatory disinfections.
  • Clean, bag and sterilize instruments.
  • Remove expired items from the clinical areas.
  • Training Duties (Internal)
  • Responsible for orienting and providing support to students from different programs including:
    1. Dental Hygiene program
    2. Dental Student program
    3. Dental Assistant programs
    4. Dental Residency program
  • Train students on basic use of eCW/Dental Module
  • Monitor and help troubleshoot as needed students' entries into EHR during their rotation
  • Obtain and manage student information; Sends to CHC Contract and Liability Manager
  • Submit an IS Request for Password creation for computer access
  • Assists the Dental Training Specialist with the clinical onboarding of new hires.
  • May be required to travel to other CHC locations
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Dental Assistant diploma or certificate of completion from an accredited school or training program including dental radiology required
  • Successful completion of Expanded Functions Dental Assistant Certificate (EFDA) within 9 months from date of hire required

Experience:

  • 2 years' experience in a dental setting required
  • Additional 1 year experience providing training for new hires and students required
  • Must have the ability to effectively use computer software and an electronic health record system.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Current/valid Expanded Functions Dental Assistant Certificate (EFDA) within 9 months from date of hire required.
  • Current/valid BLS certification within 30 days from date of hire.

Special skills:

  • Ability to stay positive in stressful situations
  • Ability to deal professionally with unhappy, fearful patients

Other requirements:

  • Able to work flexible hours and sites as needed
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver's license
